Why do people choose to come to Counselling?

Sometimes life throws things at us that perhaps we need a little help with. We can also hold on to repressed and un-dealt with events and traumas from the past that lay stagnant and hold us back. People that seek counselling may have been coping with too much for too long and also may not always be aware of what is wrong. It may be that something doesn’t feel quite right and they need a safe place in which to explore and unravel their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Likewise, people may know exactly what it is that is upsetting them but need to speak to a third, impartial party and know that it will be in the strictest of confidence in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Counselling Approach

Some problems lay in the past and others are very much in the present so therefore an eclectic mix of therapeutic methods will be used. Initially the client and therapist will work together by starting the first session(s) in the present, followed by exploring the past and then working towards a positive future. All sessions will be up-held in the strictest of confidence and provide the three main core conditions of empathy, honesty and warmth helping to establish a mutually respectable relationship between both the client and the therapist. All sessions will work within the boundaries of the National Counselling Society Code of Ethics.

Counselling was a great outlet for expressing my feelings and frustrations. I gained the strength to step back and take control. I felt secure enough to open up and knew I would not be judged but guided and reassured where appropriate. In many cases I was offered ideas which enabled me to view my circumstances from the eyes of other people and in some cases adapt my thoughts and feelings appropriately. It was a positive, enlightening experience to which I have taken strength and confidence moving forward. Thanks for all your help, support and encouragement. – RH

I went to Sue Lane for counselling due to having a few issues with self-esteem and confidence. Sue made me feel relaxed and welcome, allowing me to feel I could tell her exactly how I was feeling, knowing that she wasn’t going to judge me. It was important to me that I felt secure enough with my counsellor to tell her things that I couldn’t discuss with anybody else and Sue was able to ensure me that this would be the case. I saw Sue for approximately 6 weeks and found some of the tools she showed me very useful. I was able to use them to overcome many obstacles and move towards achieving my goals. All in all I found counselling with Sue beneficial and would go back in the future if I felt I needed to. – VL

I experienced the very quick onset of panic attacks & anxiety issues, something I never thought would happen to me. I really was at a crisis point & a colleague suggested Sue Lane. As a sceptical person I wasn’t sure how much, if any, this could help me. I had it in my mind I was only going for one session as I was convinced I would feel like this forever & nobody could help me. When I meet Sue she was extremely professional but offering me much compassion, she could see I was at boiling point. I was overthinking & worrying about everything. Sue taught me that I couldn’t control everyone and their actions being there responsibility, not mine. At the height of my panic she gave me super advice on coping mechanisms & breathing patterns. I had sessions over a period of 6 months. I went through a lot of life changing events in my early twenties continuing into my early thirties including near death experiences, bullying in the workplace & bereavement. These events started to bite back approaching my forties. I never thought after this long period of time that was the root cause of my panic & anxiety and surely counselling would be of no use to me. I only tried it as a last resort but I should of done it so much sooner. After the counselling finished I could refer back & use the techniques. I am now in a much better place & so much more like my old self. I do owe a huge thank you to Sue. – CRC
