Why do people choose to come to Counselling?

Sometimes life throws things at us that perhaps we need a little help with. We can also hold on to repressed and un-dealt with events and traumas from the past that lay stagnant and hold us back. People that seek counselling may have been coping with too much for too long and also may not always be aware of what is wrong. It may be that something doesn’t feel quite right and they need a safe place in which to explore and unravel their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Likewise, people may know exactly what it is that is upsetting them but need to speak to a third, impartial party and know that it will be in the strictest of confidence in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Counselling Approach

Some problems lay in the past and others are very much in the present so therefore an eclectic mix of therapeutic methods will be used. Initially the client and therapist will work together by starting the first session(s) in the present, followed by exploring the past and then working towards a positive future. All sessions will be up-held in the strictest of confidence and provide the three main core conditions of empathy, honesty and warmth helping to establish a mutually respectable relationship between both the client and the therapist. All sessions will work within the boundaries of the National Counselling Society Code of Ethics.

Counselling was a great outlet for expressing my feelings and frustrations. I gained the strength to step back and take control. I felt secure enough to open up and knew I would not be judged but guided and reassured where appropriate. In many cases I was offered ideas which enabled me to view my circumstances from the eyes of other people and in some cases adapt my thoughts and feelings appropriately. It was a positive, enlightening experience to which I have taken strength and confidence moving forward. Thanks for all your help, support and encouragement.
